ISNET’s International Affiliations
In order to continually stay abreast with the latest space-related developments, identify opportunities for capacity-building of the member States, ISNET has partnerships with following inter governmental organizations:-
UNCOPUOS
United Nations Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS) is the apex body for bringing/ discussing issues related to peaceful uses of outer space. ISNET acquired status of permanent observer at this prestigious platform in year 2013. It provides a platform to deliberate upon the matters pertaining to scientific and technical aspects of space activities, legal aspects and other general matter related to space sciences, technology and its applications. ISNET is highly appreciative of efforts undertaken by UNCOPOUS for promoting activities under seven thematic priorities of UNISPACE+50. ISNET was also a member of Action Team established in 2016 under UNISPACE+50 thematic priority 01 i.e. Global partnership in space exploration and innovation. Based on this commitment, ISNET carried out different capacity building activities to promote cooperation among different countries as well as organizations.
ISNET is of the view that it is important to gather stakeholders support for attaining the objectives of space technology programs and their sustainable development. ISNET acknowledges the significance of the role of UNCOPOUS and realizes the significant role of UNCOPUOS in facilitating international cooperation in the exploration and peaceful uses of outer space.
ISNET’s partnership with UN-COPUOS has proven mutually beneficial and envisaged to go a long way in ensuring that space-derived benefits reach member countries of the OIC.
GEO
Established in 2005, Group on Earth Observations (GEO) is a voluntary partnership of governments and organizations. GEO’s primary focus is to create a Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) to address environmental and societal challenges facing decision leaders and individual citizens across nine essential areas: agriculture, biodiversity, climate, disasters, ecosystems, energy, health, water and weather.
ISNET is Observer of GEO since 2015 and has attended few of its sessions. To expand the cooperation opportunity further, ISNET applied for the status of Participating Organization (PO). The application of ISNET was reviewed by GEO’s Executive Committee and during the GEO’s 17th Plenary Session held in Nov 2021; it was informed that application of ISNET for GEO’s PO status has been approved.
With acquiring this status, ISNET can engage its member states in delivering data and information in support of; Biodiversity and Ecosystem Sustainability, Disaster Resilience, Energy and Mineral Resources Management, Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture, Infrastructure and Transportation Management, Public Health Surveillance, Sustainable Urban Development and Water Resources Management. ISNET can also organize activities in collaboration with GEO and its partners for building capacity in the effective use of Earth observations in order to respond to societal challenges and address sustainable development issues.
APSCO
In order to continually stay abreast with the space-related developments in the area of space sciences, technology and applications and to identify opportunities for capacity-building of the member states, ISNET sought the status of Observer at Asia Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO) in Dec 2020.
APSCO is an inter-governmental non-profit organization with full international legal status and Secretariat in Beijing, China.
ISNET intends to actively participate in major activities of APSCO which include projects (as per eligibility), training, workshops, seminars and symposia.
Being Observer of APSCO has enabled both the organizations to share their activity plan with each other and facilitate participation in activities on reciprocal basis.
