ISNET/SUPARCO Advanced Training Course in Remote Sensing and GIS

A two-week Advanced Training Course in Remote Sensing and GIS was organised by SUPARCO at the National Centre of Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics (NCRG), Karachi from 25 Feb-8 Mar 2013. The course was aimed at providing concepts and knowledge on the advanced techniques being used in GIS development and applications. It covered topics relating to operationalisation of Satellite Remote Sensing (SRS) and GIS in different discipline areas.


It featured lectures and hands-on exercises on: new developments in Satellite Remote Sensing (SRS) and GIS; developing image processing algorithms; multidisciplinary Satellite Remote Sensing (SRS) applications; expert image classifier; Hyper-spectral Remote Sensing; 3D analysis in GIS; spatial analysis; customisation and automation in GIS; GIS Modeling; GIS application in vehicle tracking; and Web GIS.

ISNET offered partial and full sponsorship to a total of seven participants from Azerbaijan, Jordan, Pakistan Sudan and Turkey to attend the training course, namely:

  • Mr. Firuz Atakishili from Azerbaijan National Aerospace Agency (ANASA)
  • Mr. Hani AlKharabsheh from the Royal Jordanian Geographic Centre (RJGC)
  • Ms. Sidra Ahmed, Ms. Parveen Shams and Mr. Saifullah from the University of Karachi, Pakistan
  • Ms. Sara Khojali from the Remote Sensing Authority of Sudan (RSA)
  • Mr. Mustafa Teke from Space Wing of The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK-UZAY)


Besides the intensive training session, participants were also taken to different city places for sight-seeing and offsite dinners, whereby they developed an understanding about the country’s rich cultural traditions of peace and harmony as well as their delicious cuisine.
