Workshop on SAR and Optical Data Applications for Natural Resources and Environmental Management
02 – 05 November 2009, Damascus, Syria

ISNET in collaboration with General Organisation of Remote Sensing (GORS) held its annual workshop titled Workshop on SAR and Optical Data for Natural Resources and Environmental Management at GORS Headquarters in Damascus, Syria. The event was held in collaboration with Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and OIC Standing Committee on Scientific & Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH). Islamic Development Bank (IDB) provided sponsorship for the event.

The workshop was spread over four days from 02 to 05 November 2009. The theme of the workshop was specially selected keeping in view the importance of natural resources and environmental management for developing countries. Apart from discussing research projects undertaken using traditional optical imaging techniques, the workshop also focused and more keenly explored the emerging applications of advanced technologies like Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. Since gaining expertise in advanced technologies is not financially viable for most developing countries, the pooling of resources presents the best option for capacity building. It was with this thought in mind that ISNET and GORS jointly arranged this workshop for the benefit of the OIC member countries. This was the second workshop that GORS has hosted for ISNET in the last two years.

The event started with an inauguration ceremony presided by Dr Osama Ammar, Director General, GORS. Following the ceremony, Country reports and scientific papers were presented for two days. The presentation sessions included twenty seven scientific and country papers presented by participants from Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Malaysia, Pakistan, Russia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey. Some ninety (90) foreign and local participants including researchers and officials from government organisations, R&D institutions and the academia attended these presentations. The event was also covered by local newspapers and TV channels.

The last two days of the workshop comprised lectures and hands-on training sessions by experts. Dr Yousif Ali Hussin from ITC, Netherlands, Dr Jehanzeb Barki and Mrs Sadia Naeem from Pakistan gave lectures and conducted the training sessions on different topics related to Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery processing and interpretation.

The participants appreciated ISNET’s initiative of combining scientific paper presentations and training workshop session which they said benefited them more, since they not only shared knowledge but also learnt about emerging technologies and their applications from experts in the field. In the end, through a feedback form, the participants recommended measures for ISNET to broaden the scope of its activities and make them more targeted to the needs of the member countries. They also suggested important topics for future workshop.

Foreign participants at the workshop were impressed by the excellent arrangements made by GORS, as well as their exceptional hospitality. Participants also enjoyed the rich cultural and historical heritage of Syria as well as the gastronomical delights.

Advanced training on Remote Sensing & GIS
13 – 24 July 2009; NCRG, Karachi

SUPARCO organized a two week training course on Remote Sensing & GIS from 13-24 July 2009 at the National Center for Remote Sensing & Geoinformatics (NCRG), Karachi. ISNET sponsored 6 participants: one from SPARRSO, Bangladesh, three from RSA, SUDAN, one from Peshawar University, Pakistan and one from Soil Survey of Pakistan. ISNET invited Dr Jehanzeb Burki who holds a PhD in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) signal processing to deliver lectures on Synthetic Aperture Radar imagery and to discuss how it differs from traditional optical imagery.

Training Course on Remote Sensing & Digital Image Processing
13-24 April 2009; NCRG, Karachi

SUPARCO organized a two week training course on Remote Sensing & Digital Image Processing from 13-24 April 2009 at the National Center for Remote Sensing & Geoinformatics (NCRG), Karachi. ISNET sponsored 3 participants: two from RSA, Sudan and one from GORS, Syria for this course.

The course imparted knowledge and developed skill in latest technologies in Remote Sensing for development of practical applications targeted for national use.
